Centaurea Messenicolasiana Print E-mail

Centaurea Messenicolasiana (Georgiadis, Dimitrellos & Routsi)

Messenikolas, apart from its excellent wines, is also famous for a wild plant that grows exclusively in its area and not anywhere else in the world.

Some years ago scientists from Patras University located in the area of Messenikolas a unique plant in the world. This plant belongs to the genus Centaurea, therefore the species was aptly named Centaurea Messenicolasiana. It is a rare plant thriving along the old motorway that leads to the village from the location Agoritsas Vryssi to Vassardanis Vryssi and is in danger of extinction.
